Summary


In spring 1963, the parents down the street relented and told their daughter they were willing to send her to college. She wanted to study biology but that was deemed unfeminine, though home economics was acceptable.

The daughter was the oldest and had three younger brothers. The parents had long planned college for them. But in the ethos of the time, it seemed a waste of money to educate a girl who was destined to spend her life as a housewife and mother.
