Unplanned Seeds Find Way Into Yard Through Birds, Wind

Summary

Many birds visit our property daily. My husband is religious about making sure they have adequate food and clean water, and our trees and other plantings offer them plenty of shelter. But while we enjoy visits from our feathered friends, they also drop seeds in our yard which almost always seem to germinate, producing weeds and wildflowers. I read Charles Darwin once grew 80 plants from the mud he scraped off a bird's foot.

However, we can't solely blame birds for spreading these nuisance plants. They can reseed themselves, and seeds also can be carried by wind. Remember blowing dandelions when you were young? Seeds can be introduced on the clothing or shoes of humans too and by pets and other animals roaming on your property. Manure and compost often contain plant seeds as well. Even grass seed can contain weed seeds. Some plants don't need seeds to spread, instead they spread by underground roots.
