SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Cuonzo Martin has battled challenges all his life. So it really shouldn't come as too much of a shock how quickly he has turned around Missouri State's basketball fortunes.

The 38-year-old Martin, in his second season as the Bears' coach, has the surprise team in the Missouri Valley Conference this season. Missouri State (11-1), which has already won as many games as last season, plays it first home game at JQH Arena in three weeks when it entertains Illinois State (10-2) at 7 p.m. today. Both teams won their Valley openers on Tuesday.

Martin has blended seven newcomers with five returning players to look nothing like the squad that went 11-20 last season.

"I'm a little surprised from the standpoint you never know with seven new guys trying to learn a new system and dealing with the (returning) guys," he said.
