The Illinois Audubon Society recently reported results of its Winter Eagle Survey showing a total count of 2,108 eagles, up significantly from the 1,216 from the same survey a year earlier.
The later census found another hopeful sign: a rise in the percentage of immature eagles seen from 32 percent to 37 percent. Though conditions for the volunteer census takers were described as harsh, the weather was "typical" for January and ice cover was about normal.
