Born to a slave mother and unable to read until he was in his late 20s, Kentucky native George Hoagland found a small piece of the promised land in the Twin Cities, where he became a successful minister and businessman.
Hoagland was born in Bullitt County, Ky., during the Civil War. Little is known about his early life, though his mother and uncle were sold to meet obligations on a $1,800 mortgage.See the full content of this document
