BLOOMINGTON - A 27-year-old man awaiting trial on murder charges was not seen as a threat to jailers before he severely beat and stabbed one of them, the sheriff said Wednesday.

"This has been an eye-opener for our staff," McLean County Sheriff Dave Owens said in a news conference Wednesday morning. "You know, we had no indications from the defendant that he was violent toward staff in the past."
