The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is a key document in the process, taking into account a family's income, number of children and other factors.

The earliest it can be completed is Jan. 1 and most colleges give aid priority to students who complete the form by March 1, said Jana Albrecht, Illinois State University financial aid director.
