Jim Scott did not expect to go in the Armed Forces by the draft route because he was in the Marine Corps Air Force Reserve and planned to go on active duty upon graduation from Carthage College in 1954.

But when the retired University High School coach took his physical, he failed because he was 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches tall, far above the 6-4 minimum for flying jets.
