COLFAX -- Jim Kern makes his living in an ambulance, trying to save lives. When he goes home to rural Arrowsmith, he may be doing the same thing -- except for free.

Kern, a paramedic for the Gibson Area Ambulance Service, is president and an active member of the Eastern McLean County Ambulance Association, a group of 28 volunteers that provides ambulance service to the area around Saybrook, Arrowsmith, Colfax and Anchor.
