Gen. John A. Logan, an Illinois native, recognized the importance of honoring those who fell in battle when he designated the first official commemoration of Memorial Day 139 years ago.

Although the practice of decorating the graves of the dead preceded Logan's order in May 1868, his determination to continue the observance year after year helped establish Memorial Day as a national day of remembrance.
