The Illinois Supreme Court decision wasn't even close. All seven justices agreed that former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel can stay in the race for Chicago mayor. And they are right.

To have gone along with the two appellate court justices would have ignored clear precedent that was set nearly 150 years go and would have substituted difficult - if not impossible - to follow reasoning that would have raised more questions than it answered and discouraged others from government service.
