NORMAL -- Production cutbacks at Mitsubishi Motors North America were a key to the Normal plant dropping from first to third in auto plant productivity in 2003, according to an industrywide report released Thursday.

The introduction of the first sport utility vehicle at the plant and launch of the redesigned Galant sedan also were factors, said Lauri Felax, vice president of Harbour and Associates, an engineering company that each year measures productivity -- similar to the J.D. Power Report that measures quality.
