BLOOMINGTON -- AmerenIP officials believe equipment failure at a Lafayette substation is to blame for Sunday night's widespread power outage, but the utility hasn't narrowed down an exact cause.

Spokeswoman Natalie Hemmer said parts at substations sometimes shut down after other parts fail. Determining what failed first "could be difficult," she said from her office in Decatur.
