Last Place Still Remarkable Achievement in Solar Race

Summary


Time and time again we hear people say. "Winning isn't everything. It's how you play the game." Using that criteria, the Illinois State University students who built and raced a solar- powered car in the North American Solar Challenge from Austin, Texas, to Calgary, Alberta, were certainly winners even though they came in last in their stock class. They finished, which is more than cars from Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Northwestern University did.

They rebuilt the entire electrical system of a car purchased in February from the University of Minnesota. They had about $35,000 cash and in-kind contributions invested in their car, dubbed Mercury I. Some of the cars in the open class cost $1 million or more. The University of Michigan won the open class.
