Lincoln arrived in New Salem an unskilled laborer 175 years ago this spring. He left six years later as a lawyer and member of the Illinois House of Representatives.

"If he hadnt gotten hung up on the mill dam, he might have just floated on by," said Hedrick, who for 26 years has been New Salem site superintendent for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
