Lies Getting Us to Iraq Taint Success of Election

Summary


If a democratic election justifies the deaths of 100,000 Iraqis and 1,500 American troops ("Iraqi voters set example," OurViews, Feb. 1), then the failure of democracy in Vietnam must mean that those who gave their lives in that conflict died in vain.

I reject both arguments. The nobility of those who answered the call in Vietnam is clear to me. I'm also convinced that a successful election in Iraq does not change the fact that our decision to go to war there was based either on lies or on faulty intelligence.
