NORMAL - Laura Vedeen Wheatley feels the pain of people who arrive at her office, wanting help to get in shape.

Wheatley, 26, coordinator of Illinois State University's exercise physiology program in the department of kinesiology, weighed 150 pounds by her senior year in high school. She couldn't run a mile when she started training for the high school track team to lose weight at the urging of a friend. But she stuck with it. She eventually ran one mile, then two, then three.
