NORMAL - Better patient safety and outcomes, contained costs and increased health care efficiency are goals of an agreement between Advocate Health Care and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.

Advocate announced Wednesday during a news conference in Washington, D.C., that it had signed a three-year agreement with Blue Cross in which Advocate doctors and hospitals are given incentives to meet performance standards for patients covered by Blue Cross health maintenance organization and preferred provider organization plans in Illinois. Called AdvocateCare, the approach is an accountable-care organization that attaches hospital and physician reimbursement to meeting those standards.
