BLOOMINGTON - A little knowledge of history and a glance at the record books is all it takes to see why 20,000 hunters will gather for the Illinois Deer & Turkey Classic at the Interstate Center in Bloomington next weekend.

After years of over-hunting, deer were nearly extinct in the state by the early 1900s. In response, lawmakers put a hunting ban in place about the turn of the 20th century that stayed put for more than 50 years. The herd replenished its numbers, and hunting resumed in 1957. About 2,000 white-tails were harvested that first year.
