Hiring State School Chief Won't Be Rushed

Summary

Your June 19 editorial called on the State Board of Education to delay the state superintendent search and cautioned against rushing a decision, (``Don't rush search for new state school chief''). Unfortunately, the editorial ignores plans which are far from rushed and can be extended as needed. The extensive search process will take more than 10 months to complete.

Once the state board has chosen a search firm, we will get feedback from educators, parents and communities to set criteria for successful candidates. Once criteria are set, we will seek applications through Dec. 31 - well after the November gubernatorial election. Applications will then be screened and candidate interviews scheduled with the state board, a process that will not begin until well after the gubernatorial inaugural in January.
