Summary


NORMAL -- Today's observance of Earth Day 2004 finds two pairs of once-endangered Cooper's hawks nesting in trees along Constitution Trail.

The small raptors are rebounding after their numbers plummeted due to habitat loss and exposure to the pesticide DDT after World War II. They were removed from Illinois' endangered species list in 1997 as a result of a ban on DDT in the early 1970s and their own ability to adapt.
