Q I read on the Internet that 1000 mg garlic capsules given twice daily would prevent a small dog from getting fleas. Will this work? I have been using Frontline, but it is more expensive and wanted to know if there is an alternative.

A: There are many products that are very effective for fleas; unfortunately, garlic is not one of them. The amounts that you would have to use to be effective can actually be harmful to a dog. On the other hand, if you want to use garlic capsules as a supplement, they may have some nutritional benefits, and a small amount won't hurt. It is also purported to repel werewolves.
