LeROY - Jim O'Brien's interest in farming goes back as far as he can remember.

"I grew up on the farm. I think you're kind of born and raised with it. It's just in your blood," O'Brien said. "It goes back to childhood. When the school bus dropped us off, the first thing I wanted was to see what was going on in the field."

But O'Brien is an anomaly. The 33-year-old farmer is a youngster in an aging profession.

The average age of an Illinois farmer in 2002 was more than 55 years old, according to the federal 2002 Census of Agriculture. That's up from about 51 years old in 1974.
