WAPELLA - No one was home when the kitchen and back of a farmhouse were gutted by a fire Wednesday morning about a half-mile south of Wapella, temporarily closing U.S. 51.

"I just took (wife Michelle) to work (in Clinton) and I was coming home when I saw it," said Todd Russell, who lives with his wife and two children at the rural home he rents from his father. "When I got here, there were already four people here and my house was on fire."
