Summary
Pennsylvania native Bob Petruney never saw so many bald eagles in one place until he moved to Illinois four years ago. A ranger with the Army Corps of Engineers, Petruney conducts the weekly eagle census at the Illinois Waterway Visitors Center across the Illinois River from Starved Rock State Park at Utica. Last year, he counted 130 bald eagles grouped on islands just downstream from Starved Rock Dam when weather turned frigid in February. On Friday alone, he counted seven eagles.
"Growing up in Pennsylvania, I got to see one once in a while," Petruney said. "When I came here, it was like, Wow!' I was amazed at how many eagles there are."See the full content of this document
