As I was ruminating -- as I often seem to do at 3 in the morning - - about how to spend our wedding anniversary, it occurred to me that counting the years of a good life might be better than just celebrating by eating a big steak or having a party.

Since over a third of my life has been in this community, kudos go to Bloomington-Normal. We and our three sons have had good educations from public and private schools -- including Illinois Wesleyan, Southern Illinois University and Northwestern -- with the help of government, scholarships and work.
