NEWS IN BRIEFChamber discusses smoking banBLOOMINGTON - The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors discussed a proposed public places smoking ban Thursday but did not decide if it will take a stance.Chamber Executive Director Mike Malone said a committee wants to study the issue before recommending action to the board. The board is expected to continue the discussion at its Feb. 23 meeting. Bloomington and Normal city councils are considering whether to adopt a public place smoking ban. The two councils will have a joint work session at 7 p.m. Monday in the community room at Heartland Community College. The public is invited but public comments will not be taken. Bloomington City Council will have a public comment meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at Bloomington City Hall.Promotion to helpMcDonald HouseBLOOMINGTON - A promotion at McDonalds restaurants will raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois through Feb. 14.Customers can buy hearts for donations of $1, $5 or more. They will be displayed at restaurants.Ronald McDonald Charities provides support and hospitality to families of seriously ill children. Each year, more than 900 families stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield while their child/children are hospitalized.Community center to host workshopNORMAL - UNITY Community Center, Town of Normal, University of Illinois Extension will host an Intercultural Youth Workshop for adults and youth 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Community Activity Center, 1 Normal Plaza, Normal.As part of this days event there will be performances by: the UNITY Kids, AfriCaribe from Chicago. An African Fashion show has been added to occur during lunch hour. There will be workshops on college access, diversity and much more. Also as part of this event there will be food, music, informational tables by MAPP, SHARE, Habitat for Humanity-Youth United, College Zone and much more.There is a $2 registration fee for all those who wish to participate. It will be presented to the council in its Feb. 15 meeting.POLICE, FIRE, RESCUENo one shot duringdomestic incidentBLOOMINGTON - Two men fighting over the same woman were responsible for the gunshots heard shortly before midnight Wednesday in west Bloomington, police said.The men, who are the boyfriend and ex-boyfriend of the woman, were struggling for control of a rifle when the weapon discharged, the sheriffs department said.While neither was struck by the gunfire, one of the men suffered injuries to his face during the fight and later refused medical treatment, the department said.Police were called at 11:59 p.m. to an address in the 8000 block of Surrey Circle, which is west of Apollo Acres on Bloomingtons west edge.Sheriffs deputies took the men into temporary custody, but let them go later and have referred the incident to the States Attorneys office.
