Summary


The USDA announced recently that a U.S. cow was afflicted with bovine spongiform encephalopathy -- BSE. The infected cow was a "downer," meaning it was unable to walk.

Mad cow disease, BSE, eats holes in the brains of cattle. Humans can contract a form of mad cow disease, called CJD or Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease, if they eat infected beef or nerve tissue.
