Dempster Could Miss Month with Broken Toe

CHICAGO - If Lou Piniella had not banned the term two weeks ago in Detroit, Ryan Dempster's broken toe certainly would classify as a "Cubbie Occurrence." But the Cubs weren't laughing Tuesday when it was announced Dempster would miss up to a month of action after breaking the big toe on his right foot while jumping over the dugout fence after Sunday's victory over Milwaukee.

Avanti's Angelssweep Twin Bill

Kelsey Williams and Megan Nonnemacher notched pitching victories to lift the BNGSA Avanti's Angels 18-under travel softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the BNGSA Rebels, 8-3 and 3-1, Tuesday at Champion Fields in Normal. Williams (9-4) won the opener, allowing five hits and two earned runs in five innings with five strikeouts. Emma Clark had three hits and two stolen bases for the Angels (24-6). Hannah Wenger paced the Rebels with two hits.

NORMAL - Since shortly after taking over as Illinois State football coach, Brock Spack has been trying to shore up the depth in his secondary. That effort would seem to have taken a hit with the recent dismissal from the team of senior cornerback Jason Tate after an off- the-field incident.

CHAMPAIGN - Brian Cook must qualify as a celebrity in order for People magazine to cover his recent wedding on their Web site. Cook, the 28-year-old former Illini basketball star and Lincoln native, married Victoria Velasquez on Saturday at the Trump National Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif. About 150 attended the ceremony, including some of Cook's friends from the NBA.

Ex-Redbird Dyer Signswith German Hoops Team

Former Illinois State men's basketball player Levi Dyer has signed a contract to play professional basketball in Germany. Dyer will play for Science City Jena in the German Pro A League next season. Dyer played at Illinois State from 2005-08, averaging 7.3 points and 2.3 rebounds. He ending his career ranked fifth in career 3- point field goal percentage (.422) and ninth in 3-pointers made (141). He was an All-Missouri Valley Conference Honorable Mention selection in 2007.

BLOOMINGTON - The sixth annual U.S. Army Midwest Nationals Wrestling Tournament will be Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan's Shirk Center. Competitors will be matched by weight class in seven different age divisions.- Wrestlers from eight states are currently represented (Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin) in the pre-registered field.
