Wind Towers Would Mar 'Million Dollar' View
My parents purchased 160 acres in 1941, sacrificing to pay for this farm and an additional 80 acres. Dad was a pioneer in soil conservation in the area. He built waterways and terraces using a pull-behind road grader in the late 1940s. The yields we get may not impress some flatland farmers, but you have to be tough to farm up here.
EUREKA -- The Illinois attorney general's office says Eureka city officials violated the Open Meetings Act three times earlier this year, but no fines or sanctions will be sought. The violations stem from the City Council's Administration and Personnel Committee meetings in March.

Outdoor Skills Combine in Bowfishing
Christine Appleberg admits she was a tomboy growing up. She lived across the street from a lake. Her mom liked to fish, so she taught Appleberg the sport. But Appleberg learned most other outdoor skills by reading old magazines. She taught herself how to shoot a bow. She even learned to trap.
Unit 5 District May Need to Build
NORMAL -- Dealing with expected enrollment growth will dominate Unit 5's planning for both the short and long term, officials at the Normal-based school district heard Wednesday. In the first of two strategy-planning meetings this month, board members and administrators looked Wednesday at various options to deal with the growth. These include adding portable classrooms, building new buildings or adding to current buildings.

BLOOMINGTON -- Making the Constitution Trail more accessible from downtown Bloomington was among the concerns voiced Wednesday at a hearing on the city's comprehensive plan. The Bloomington Planning Commission also received an update on the city's long-range plans to expand the water supply by tapping the Mahomet Aquifer.
Study May Offer Insights to Living Wage
BLOOMINGTON -- A long-term study on the living-wage concept in Los Angeles may offer a few insights into how it would affect Bloomington if the City Council approves an ordinance that would set such a minimum pay for city workers. The study, released today through the University of California and the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, surveyed 320 of the 10,000 workers affected by the city of Los Angeles' living-wage ordinance passed in 1997.

NORMAL -- The tying run stood at second base with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. As the Maxwell Park crowd for both sides started cheering, Stephanie Butler remained calm inside the pitching circle. "It was really no big deal as long as I can throw my pitches. We have a great defense to back me up, so I'm not that worried about it," said Bloomington High School's sophomore right-hander.
