Thank to Volunteers During National Week
As a member of the McLean County Volunteer Coordinators' Association, I am very aware of the many local organizations that would not exist if it were not for the volunteers and their efforts. The McLean County Museum of History is one of those organizations.
Bishops Decision to Delay Audit a Step Back
The Catholic bishops, under pressure from some of the more powerful, have made the decision to delay the conduct of the second audit scheduled in 2004. This is the audit that would delve more comprehensively into issues of compliance with the Dallas Charter and the audit so strongly recommended by all members of the National Lay Review Board.

ROCK ISLAND -- Illinois Wesleyan's Brynn Hasse hit a triple when she was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin softball batter of the week for the third time this season. Hasse hit .633 in eight games with 19 hits in 30 at bats and 12 runs scored. She had three hits against North Central, Hope and Wisconsin-Whitewater and was 5-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and a triple in a 11-4 win over Maryville in the IWU Tournament this weekend.
Normal Council Changes Liquor Code
NORMAL -- Drinkers will have an extra two hours a week to buy their favorite alcohol in Normal. After a lengthy discussion Monday night, the city council approved extending liquor sale hours at restaurants to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The changes won't go into effect for 10 days.
NORMAL -- The town will issue up to $4.26 million in bonds for the Shoppes at College Hills and give a tax incentive so developers can repay the bonds. The city council approved a "letter of intent" Monday with developers Cullinan Properties of Peoria.
Eva Barekman BLOOMINGTON -- Eva M. "Maisie" Barekman, 70, of 1017 S. Mercer Ave., Apt. 131, Bloomington, died at 4:45 p.m. Sunday (April 18, 2004) at Heritage Manor, Bloomington.
Dorothy Denton BLOOMINGTON -- Dorothy E. Denton, 94, of 4 Felton Place, Bloomington, died at 6:52 p.m. Saturday (April 17, 2004) at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.
James Kerrick Sr. BLOOMINGTON -- James Francis Kerrick Sr., 67, of 106 Tanner St., Bloomington, died at 4:58 p.m. Sunday (April 18, 2004) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.
Verna Pickett BLOOMINGTON -- Verna M. Pickett, 96, of 700 E. Walnut St., Bloomington, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday (April 18, 2004) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Bloomington.
Pastor Robert Wilcox BLOOMINGTON -- Pastor Robert Lee Wilcox, 67, of Indianapolis, Ind., formerly of Bloomington, went to be with Jesus on Friday (April 16, 2004) from his home surrounded by family.
CARBONDALE -- The Illinois State women's golf team remained in first place after the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Monday, but only by the slimmest of margins. After a second-round score of 317 for a two-day total of 628, the Redbirds saw their nine-stroke lead cut to one stroke. Northern Iowa shot 304 Monday to move into second place, with third-place Southern Illinois (631) only three shots behind the Redbirds.

Mcdonald's Ceo Cantalupo Dies ; Australian Named Successor
BLOOMINGTON -- The biannual McDonald's worldwide franchisee convention in Orlando, Fla., was supposed to begin Monday as a celebration of Chairman and CEO Jim Cantalupo's turnaround of the fast-food giant's fortunes. Instead it became a wake after Cantalupo died unexpectedly of a heart attack Monday at age 60.
LOCAL Project management confab set for Bloomington BLOOMINGTON - - Author and nationally known speaker Seth Godin will be the featured speaker at the project management conference May 13 and 14 at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Bloomington. Hosted by the Central Illinois Chapter of the Project Management Institute, the conference is expected to draw nearly 400 attendees.
The Normal Community High School softball team rallied with a run in the fourth inning and one in the sixth to earn a 2-1 nonconference win over Chatham Glenwood Monday at Normal's Anderson Park. The Titans (10-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer, but the Ironmen tied it when Shanna Diller singled home courtesy runner Kaitlyn Tretter.
Lahood: U.S. Must Stay Vigilant ; Elections and Olympics Present Security Concerns
SPRINGFIELD -- U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood is echoing concerns of National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, saying the upcoming presidential election could be tempting to terrorists. "We know there are people here who are trying to figure out ways to hurt Americans because they don't like our system of government," the Peoria Republican said at a press conference Monday in Springfield. "They don't like us. They don't like what we've done, the way we've conducted the war on terror."
