NORMAL -- Illinois State University students will mark the 20th anniversary of a major chemical plant disaster with a demonstration Friday calling for social responsibility in major corporations. About 20,000 people have died since 40 tons of deadly methyl isocyanate escaped Dec. 3, 1984, from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India.

BLOOMINGTON -- The family of a woman who died at a Twin City nursing home has filed a lawsuit claiming she was neglected at the facility. The estate of Marilyn Jane Webb is seeking more than $50,000 from Asta Care Center of Bloomington.

Sophomore forward Shayla Pelo had a game-high 16 points to lead the Tri-Valley High School girls basketball team to a 43-27 nonconference win at Clinton on Tuesday night. Duo Propels Ridgeview ; Smock, Graham Team Up for 40 Points, 14 Rebounds

The senior forward tandem of Chris Smock and Jeff Graham combined for 40 points and 14 rebounds as Ridgeview High School opened its season with a 61-41 victory over Fieldcrest in a Midstate Conference game Tuesday night at Minonk. Smock had six points in the first quarter and Graham added five to help Ridgeview bolt to a 21-8 lead. Smock, who finished with a game-high 22 points, added six more in the second period as the Mustangs held a 31-20 advantage at halftime.

Petersen's Putback Saves Gcms

A putback of a missed free throw at the buzzer by Brett Petersen lifted the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School basketball team to a thrilling 84-82 overtime victory over Urbana Uni-High in Sangamon Valley Conference action Tuesday night at Gibson City. Trailing 82-81 with 3.4 seconds left in overtime, the Falcons' Ryan Hornsby made the first of two free throws to tie the score before missing the second to set up the game-winner by Petersen.
